Lute Bauer and her two talented daughters, Lucy Mary and Katherine (Tattie).

Lute Bauer was born in Madison, IN, the daughter of shoe merchant, Edward Branham, who moved his family to Indianapolis during the Civil War. The eldest of five children she was devoted to her nieces, nephews and particularly her two musical daughters, Lucy and Katherine, by husband, George Bauer, son of immigrant John George Bauer and founder of Ko-We-Ba Foods.

The author's great-grandmother, Lute Bauer was a most talented and determined woman. An accomplished pianist, she also wrote stories and poetry. Her writings, though never published, were worthy. She particularly enjoyed writing about and for children. Around 1900 she collaborated with friend and artist Emma Sangston Spahr in producing a beautiful children's book entitled "Toptown Toddlers." Lute provided the poetry and photographs; her friend Emma, the magnificent watercolors of neighborhood children.

After the marriage of her eldest daughter Lucy to Hiram Raffensperger, Lute traveled to Europe in 1907 where daughter Katherine (Tattie) studied violin in Berlin.

Justly Proud includes many of Lute's personal letters to friends and family and quotes from her creative writing.
