Immigrant John George Bauer helped to found the Maennerchor and the German-English School in Indianapolis before dying prematurely in 1858. He left a wife and three young children. On completion of their education at the German- English School all three of his children went to work. The eldest child Elizabeth Bauer found work in early Indianapolis as an assistant to insurance agents. An independent career woman she worked until she was in her eighties.
