Several generations of German Americans in Indianapolis have vibrantly contributed to the cultural enrichment in Indianapolis and the Hoosier state. Lucy "Lute" Branham Bauer, described in this book, is an example: she participated in Matinee Musicale as a pianist and accompanied daughter Katherine to study violin in Germany. A professional-level amateur photographer, she did studies of the city's children for her book Toptown Toddlers. It was only one of the books she authored, all of which remained unpublished. This photographic study of "Harry" was turned into a watercolor by her friend Emma Sangston Spahr
